Shore Cottage: Westport, MA
Perched atop an old cornfield beside the Westport River, with southern views stretching toward the Atlantic, this summer home embodies a relaxed coastal charm. The design concept draws inspiration from the dry-laid farmers’ walls that pattern the surrounding landscape. Intrigued by the light and space formed in the gaps between the stones, we conceived two primary volumes separated by a transparent glass breezeway — a modern reinterpretation of that local vernacular.
Set within a landscape of meadow grasses and coastal flora, the home’s material palette of stone and cedar anchors it naturally to its site. Maintaining a low, unobtrusive profile, the structure nestles into the terrain, while its two-story sleeping wing provides shelter from the prevailing northeast winds and opens elevated views to the ocean beyond. The result is a home that feels both timeless and deeply connected to its coastal setting.
