Smallcraft

Winners of Cape Cod Magazines Annual Design Competition

JLA was thrilled to one of four projects selected as winners of Cape Cod Magazines Annual house awards. "Smallcraft" as it is known, is representative of the traditional small-scale architecture of Madaket, a fishing village at the western end of Nantucket.  As is the case with many of the surrounding buildings, Smallcraft is a collection of smaller modules pieced together over time to accommodate the various uses of the building.  The original shack on the property, dating to the early 1900’s, was used for drying eels pulled from the surrounding creeks and marshes.

The extensive renovation addressed multiple issues from the purely functional to the aesthetic.  It required raising the house above the floodplain, replacing most structural components, and updating septic and mechanical systems.   Furthermore, as a historic structure, the exterior design remains largely unchanged with most of the design effort focused on creating a warm and contemporary interior with hints of its nautical upbringing.
